How to move a Discord thread or forum post to another channel

You can move a Discord thread or forum post to another channel. The product walkthrough is the Discord thread mover.

Discord has no built-in way to move a Discord thread or forum post. Pippin does it with a right-click: Apps → Move. Messages, author name and avatar, attachments, reactions, stickers, and embeds move with it. Destinations are a new thread in a channel, a new forum post, flattened into a channel, or merged into an existing thread or forum post.

A thread moved into a new channel. The recording starts from the thread, runs Apps → Move, and wraps the conversation in a thread at the destination.
  1. Select the thread or forum post. Right-click its first message, or open ⋯, then Apps → Move.

  2. Choose what to do with it. Take the whole conversation with All below, then a new thread, a new forum post, flat channel messages, or an existing thread or forum post.

  3. Pick the destination channel, thread, or forum. Search, or paste a Discord link.

  4. Choose whether to delete the original. Pippin asks after the move, and keeps it if you do not answer.

Can you move threads in Discord natively?

No. Discord has no move action for a thread or a forum post. Copying the text by hand drops the author, the attachments, and the reactions. Pippin is the move: one context-menu command, Apps → Move, on the first message of the thread or post.

The same command moves a single message or a counted range. Those are covered in Move one message and Move a range of messages.

Move a thread or forum post with Pippin

Start from the first message. All below then includes the starter and every reply, up to 200 messages in one run. A longer thread takes a second run.

In a text channel, the wizard opens in a private setup thread and deletes that thread about sixty seconds after a successful move. The wizard stays open for 13 minutes.

Select the thread or forum post

Open the thread or the forum post. Right-click the first message, or open ⋯ on the right side of that message, then choose Apps → Move.

Starting on the first message is what lets All below capture the entire conversation. Starting lower down moves only that message and the ones after it.

Choose what to do with the thread or forum post

Pippin does not show a separate Move thread / forum menu. Apps → Move is the command, and the destination decides the shape:

  • New thread in a channel. Pick a text or announcement channel, choose All below, then Yes (public) or Yes (private) when asked whether to wrap into a new thread.
  • New forum post. Pick a forum channel. Pippin creates the post.
  • Flattened into a channel. Pick a channel and do not wrap the messages in a thread.
  • Merged into an existing thread or forum post. Pick that thread or post as the destination.

Choose All below so the starter and the replies all move. Pippin previews the last message in the range before you confirm.

All below, which takes the starter and every reply after it

Pick the destination channel, thread, or forum

Open the destination picker and search by name, or choose paste a link and drop in a Discord link. The picker accepts text and announcement channels, existing threads (public, private, or announcement), existing forum posts, and forum channels. You only see rooms you can access. An unsupported link is rejected with an explanation instead of failing mid-move.

If the server has more rooms than Discord can list, type in the menu to search. That limit is Discord’s, not Pippin’s.

Choose whether to delete the original

Pippin does not delete the source as part of setting up the move. After the move succeeds, it asks whether to clean up the originals, with Delete and Keep, and it warns that there is no undo. If you do not answer, it keeps them.

If the whole thread or forum post moved, Pippin can delete that thread or post. If only some messages moved, it deletes only those messages, and only after you say so.

Confirm the move before Pippin starts

The Review move screen shows how many messages will move and what that costs against the server’s remaining balance. Confirm there. Choosing not to continue cancels the move, and nothing is copied.

Review move, with the move cost and the moves still available

A whole thread counts the starter plus every reply. A 40-reply thread is 41 moves, plus one more if Pippin creates a new thread or forum post at the destination. Creating the destination is the extra move. The free tier includes 300 moves per month plus 1,000 one-time bonus moves. Every feature included. Monthly moves reset at midnight UTC on the 1st. /move_status shows the plan, monthly usage, and remaining bonus moves. Paid plans are on Plans and pricing.

What you see while Pippin is working

A progress bar with Cancel runs until the move finishes. Cancel leaves messages that already moved at the destination, and leaves the rest in the original thread or post.

When the move finishes, Pippin asks about deleting the originals. In a text channel, the private setup thread removes itself about sixty seconds after success.

The four move results

ResultWhat you getWhen to use it
Repost into a channel as a threadA new public or private thread in that channel. Pippin names it from the source, copies the auto-archive duration, and opens with a disclaimer (original author, timestamp, and a jump link). The conversation should stay a thread, in another channel.
Repost into a forumA new forum post. The disclaimer is the starter. The moved messages follow as replies. The thread or post belongs in a forum.
Flatten into a channelThe messages, in order, as normal channel messages. The thread structure is removed on purpose. The thread format no longer fits.
Flatten into a thread or forumThe messages merged into a thread or forum post that already exists. The conversation should join one that is already open.

Source forum tags are not carried over. If the destination forum requires a tag, Pippin applies the first available tag so the post can be created. Change the tag afterwards if you need a different one.

A conversation turned into a new forum post. Pippin creates the post, then moves the messages in as replies.

Threads attached to moved messages can come along. Pippin asks Bring sub-threads along? A move into a regular channel recreates each sub-thread, and a public thread stays public while a private thread stays private. A move into a thread or forum post flattens those sub-threads inline, with an attribution note.

Move a private Discord thread

Pippin can move a private thread’s messages out to a channel, into an existing private thread, or into a new private thread.

Run Apps → Move inside the private thread and pick the destination. To keep the result private, pick an existing private thread, or pick a channel and choose Yes (private) when Pippin asks whether to wrap the messages into a new thread.

Visibility follows Discord’s private-thread rules: only members of that private thread can read it. The person running the move needs access to both the source and the destination. Pippin checks those permissions before anything moves.

The step-by-step for all three directions is on Move Discord messages into or out of a private thread.

What gets preserved

Webhook reposting keeps each author’s server nickname and avatar, in the original order. Attachments are re-uploaded. Embeds are copied. Emoji reactions are recreated. Links and GIFs are part of the message content and preview again at the destination. Stickers are included where Discord allows them. If Discord rejects a sticker, Pippin reposts that message without the sticker instead of failing the move.

Only members who were @mentioned in the original message bodies get pinged. Otherwise no one is pinged.

Discord does not let a bot recreate reply links, so those become ordinary messages in the same order. Pinned status is not carried over. Re-pin anything that should stay pinned. A message over 2,000 characters asks you to split it, skip it, or cancel. An oversized attachment asks you to drop the attachment, skip the message, or cancel. You can remember that choice for the rest of the move.

A new thread or forum post starts with a disclaimer that names the original author, includes the timestamp, and links back to the source.

Permissions Pippin needs

The moderator running the move needs Manage Messages, plus permission to send messages in the destination, or to create threads there if the move creates one.

The bot needs Manage Messages, Manage Webhooks, View Channel, and Read Message History. Pippin checks these before the move and lists anything missing. It does not need Administrator.

Channel overrides can remove those permissions in one channel even when the invite granted them. Private channels stay hidden until Pippin’s role can view them. The setup steps are on Set up Pippin and Permissions and troubleshooting.

Add Pippin to your server uses the same bot and the same permission integer as the Add to Discord button on pippin.gg.

FAQ

Can you move threads in Discord?

Not with Discord itself. There is no built-in move for a thread. Pippin adds one: right-click the first message, choose Apps → Move, and send the thread to a channel, a new thread, a forum, or an existing thread.

Can you move a Discord thread to another channel?

Yes. Open the thread, run Apps → Move on its first message, pick the other channel, and choose All below. Wrap it into a new thread there, or leave the messages flat in the channel.

Can you move a thread to a different channel in Discord?

Yes. The destination can be a text or announcement channel, another thread, an existing forum post, or a forum channel. Search for it, or paste a Discord link.

Can you move forum posts in Discord?

Not natively. Pippin creates a new post at the destination and moves the starter and every reply, in order, still showing the original authors.

How do I move a forum post to another forum?

Open the post, right-click its first message, choose Apps → Move, pick the other forum, and choose All below. Tags from the source forum are not copied. If the new forum requires a tag, Pippin applies the first available one.

Will moving a thread notify or re-ping members?

Only members who were @mentioned in the original message bodies get pinged. Otherwise no one is pinged.

Does the original thread get deleted?

Only if you choose Delete after the move finishes. If you do not answer, Pippin keeps the original. There is no undo.
